Default Programmable Mouse

I am currently looking to buy a new mouse. My question is, is it worth it to buy a mouse with programmable buttons? Guild Wars is the only game I play, so I guess my question should be does anyone use the programmable buttons for Guild Wars?

The 2 mice I am trying to decide between are the Logitech G5 which does have programmable buttons and the cheaper MX400 which does not.

A follow up question is, if you do use the programmable buttons, what do you set them to?

They are not that effective for GW, i know some people that use them while monking in PvP or inturrpting but thats about it.

the MX400 does have programmable buttons.

personally for GW, i have the two side buttons set to my two interrupts (i play ranger), which allow me to twitch interrupt with my right hand instead of my left. this generally gives me better results. i also use them when monking, which gives me a slight advantage because of faster preprots.

if you don't like setpoint (which is the software for logitech mice), try x-mouse, which works on any mouse that features two side buttons.

Hey thanks for the quick responses. I had not thought about using the side buttons for interrupts, that is a good idea as I too play a ranger. I think I will get the MX400 then, I had forgotten about changing the side buttons.

Thanks again

I have the 2007 Logitech G5 and it works fine for whatever you wanna program it to.

I just programmed the two buttons to switch between songs in Winamp while I play games.

I use my side buttons for target nearest and target next.

Note - you don't need any software to use the buttons on the MX400 (or most mice) in Guild Wars. The side buttons are recognized as mouse4 and mouse5 by GW (and XP/Vista).
For example, I use the rear-most thumb button on my MX518 for "target nearest". In the control setup for GW, "Target Foe - nearest" is set to "C", "\" and "mouse button 4". I didn't need to use software to set the button to "c" first - I've had conflicts with the software/driver in the past so I don't use it (I just plugged it into a USB port and away it went )

No idea where the "\" came from btw.

So, unless you want to use macros (a series of separate keystrokes), there's no need to get a mouse with "programmable" buttons.

speaking of macros, i believe someone once bind "death's charge", "target nearest object" and "pick up item" onto one button. it essentially allowed him to shadowstep with a flag while flag running, since the way that GW handles picking up items is a little quirky.

anyways quaker, thanks for telling me that GW supports mouse4 and mouse5. when i first tried it about two years back, GW did not support those buttons, so i always had to use workarounds like setpoint and x-mouse.

I recommend the Razer Death Adder.

It's fairly cheap and is the best mouse I've ever owned. The g5, Copperhead and Diamond back all hail in comparison.
